The following case studies were conducted in a placebo-controlled format from March through May, 1995. Each of the subjects received an REI Program tape, although the subjects were unaware whether they had a real REI recording or a placebo tape containing traditional African rhythms. They were instructed to play the recording daily for the first four weeks and at least three times per week for the second four weeks. Assessments were made by the parents.
M.W.
Male, Age 10
ADD
At the beginning of the study M.W. would often request the tape. By the four week assessment he generally wouldnít request the tape, but he was always willing to listen to it. He was noticeably more relaxed and in control of his actions. His mother stated, church is usually a difficult time and we have had a few great experiences in the past month. I donít recall ever telling him positive things after church before the study. He also showed noticeable improvements in the following categories: overall anxiety, his ability to understand and follow directions, attention span, listening ability, ability to focus on tasks, and frequency of temper tantrums.
After eight weeks he still enjoyed listening to the recording. His mother reported that there were less tantrums and emotional outbursts. She also stated, I felt that his behavior improved as he listened to the recording. The place where it was most obvious was in church. He usually tries very hard to sit and focus. When we lessened the listening time, and before the study, he would fidget and admit that it was difficult. While listening to the tape (during the study) he seemed to be much more in control and able to relax his body. M.W. continued to improve in the categories observed at the four week assessment, with the addition of an improvement in his ability to handle transitions or change.
M. L.
Female, Age 11
ADD
At the four week assessment her mother reported that M.L. had been having a very difficult time. Her pediatrician believed that she may be depressed. She stares into space. Something she hasnít done before. Her grades are down. She isnít as outgoing. I donít think these things are related to the study. I think they are related to other circumstances. There have been a couple deaths in the family (one being a grandmother she was very close to).
After this consultation M.L. was given a new set of rhythms.
After an additional four weeks with the new tape M.L. showed considerable improvement in the following categories: overall anxiety, her ability to understand and follow directions, attention span, and frequency of temper tantrums. Her mother reported that The first tape didnít seem to be quite as effective as the second tape. She brought her grades up to Aís and Bís from Aís, Bís, Cís, and a D+ after the second tape was started. She seems to be more in touch and is staring into space less often. Now that she is feeling better she is a lot easier to handle. I do feel that the tape did help her with attention span also.
J.W.
Female, age 9
ADD
After four weeks in the study J.W. showed remarkable improvements in the following categories: overall anxiety, ability to follow directions, aggressive behaviors, memory, attention span, eye contact, listening ability, restlessness, ability to handle transitions or change, cooperation, ability to focus on and complete tasks, and temper tantrums. Her mother reported that She has had very few temper tantrums. She is also developing the ability of being able to stop herself and calm herself down, usually within about one minute of when the tape starts. Her teachers in school have noticed a drastic change in Jessie over the past month --a very positive change. She has had a behavior chart in school-- every 15 minutes the teachers would mark a [+] or [-] for the behavior. Before starting the tape, many days she would have 10-15 [-]. After listening to the tape for the first two weeks, she started having a day here and there of all [+]. At the end of the first month on the tape she had 7 consecutive days of all [+]. Sheís been getting along much better with her brothers and sisters. Her attention span has increased--she can sit quietly and read a book for longer periods of time. Sheís paying attention more in school and staying on task. She used to bring home a lot of homework daily; now she brings home very little, except for study guides for tests.
